Mind Meld or Mission Muddle? Are your employees really hearing your message?

You may think you’re sending clear messages, outlining expectations, yet performance remains... underwhelming. Here's the secret: employees aren't mind readers!  If you notice any underperformance or a misalignment with expectations, I highly recommend you initiate an open and constructive dialogue. People crave connection, clarity, and a chance to be heard. That's why open dialogue is so important.

More importantly, why did they choose to work there in the first place? They went through the entire application process and were hired for a reason, what’s changed?

Rather than simply conveying your expectations, or telling people what to do, this should be a two-way conversation. Take the time to not only communicate your expectations but also ask about their perspective on what they believe your expectations are. Ask them what excites them about this project or their current position. This collaborative approach allows for valuable input, shedding light on their viewpoint and the reasons behind their current performance levels. Ask, "What do YOU think my expectations are for this project?" or “What do you believe I expect when it comes to giving our guests the best customer service?”  The answers might surprise you! Misinterpretations, hidden assumptions, and even outdated company messages can come to light. This paves the way for alignment and a shared vision. Isn’t that what we’re all after?

You may also be thinking to yourself, well I’ve told them what the expectations are but they’re still not hitting standard.  It’s possible you may be experiencing mission drift. As companies expand, new employees are hired or leadership changes, the interpretation of the message and mission can become diluted. It’s not the employees fault if the mission has drifted or become muddled.

By investing in open dialogue, clarifying purpose, and nurturing accountability, you unlock a hidden treasure: the true potential of your team. Remember, employees aren't robots programmed to follow orders. They're individuals with unique perspectives and a desire to contribute meaningfully. Make time for the conversation. In fact embrace the conversation, and watch your team grow!

I want to hear from you. I believe leadership is a responsibility which is why I share my perspective on things. I also believe the company’s mission plays a huge part in what drive your team.

Maybe you’re an employee who is wishing for a more communicative work environment. Maybe you’re the decision maker at your company who has tried or is working on a culture of engaged, mission driven employees.

Whoever you may be, I would love to hear about your experiences.

As always, wishing you a happy and healthy working environment!
